Your are at lesson : 6 We all know that a group of alphabets make up a syllable and a group of syllables form a word. A syllable is defined as A part of word uttered in a single vocal impulse. So, the word telugu contains three syllables, te + lu + gu. Do you have remember the way vowels and consonants are defined (See Review)? Now, let us divide the above syllables into vowels and consonants: te ----> ta(consonant) + e(vowel) lu ----> la(consonant) + u(vowel) gu ----> ga(consonant) + u(vowel) You might have observed how each syllable ended in a vowel! Its unique in telugu that every syllable should end in a vowel. A consonant can be combined with all the vowels to form various syllables. For example, the first consonant "ka" can be combined with various vowels a,A,i,I,u,U,e,E,o,O,ai to form these syllables ka,kA,ki,kI,ku,kU,ke,kE,ko,kO,kai . That's very straight forward isn't it? Phonetic english is very linear! All you had to do was to attach the vowel to "k" to form respective ka,kA,ki,kI,ku etc., Now let's us see how they are written in telugu script. But in telugu the shape of the base-consonant is "morphed". Observe how the "tick" sign on the top of the base-consonant "ka" is "morphed" in the successive syllables.
Now try out how these consonants are morphed.
